Fascinating to watch Woody Allen's court battle with clothing manufacturing behemoth American Apparel. As reported here, the comedian has sued the company after it posted billboards in New York and Los Angeles that used an image of him in full rabbinical attire, from his movie "Annie Hall," without his authorization.
Now, as the Guardian reports, lawyers for American Apparel say he can't sue them for ruining his reputation as he has no reputation left to ruin, alluding to that affair he had with his stepdaughter, Soon-Yi Previn. The company is playing hard ball now, demanding documents relating to any advertising endorsements that were cancelled or withdrawn following the revelation of the affair.
The company's claims are over the top given that Allen married Soon-Yi in 1997. And what I don't understand is this: if Woody Allen is such a dirty old man, why the hell did American Apparel use him in their advertisements? No doubt that's a question that will be put up when the case goes to court next month.
